As the flu season draws closer there are a number of people in at-risk groups who need the flu vaccine

People with respiratory disease are particularly more vulnerable to the flu and its serious complications including severe illness, hospitalisation and even death.

Influenza is a leading cause of illness and death worldwide and, locally, data shows that patients with respiratory disease make up a significant portion of flu-related hospitalisations. In the 2024/25 winter season, we saw some of the highest numbers of acute admissions for flu since before the pandemic.

Getting the flu vaccine every year is the best way to prevent flu-related complications and hospitalisation and we are encouraging everyone who is invited for the flu vaccine to get vaccinated to protect their health.

Andrew Smith, Consultant Physician in respiratory disease, said: “Flu is a virus that spreads easily and can be very serious.

“There are a number of patient groups that are vulnerable to the flu and people with respiratory disease like COPD, asthma, and chronic lung conditions are at a much higher risk of severe flu complications.

“Even in individuals without chronic respiratory conditions, flu can lead to significant respiratory complications. In fact, children under 14 have an eight times increase risk of pneumonia after a flu infection. Adults with asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema are also much more likely to face serious flu complications.

“Getting the flu jab can reduce the risk of severe complications, especially for those with respiratory disease. So if you are offered the flu vaccine my advice is take it and protect yourself and your loved ones this winter.”
