In the lead-up to the NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals and teams shortlisted for this year’s awards.
The Intensive Care Team at University Hospital Hairmyres provides exceptional care in an environment where patients and families are often facing the most frightening and uncertain moments of their lives.
What makes this team stand out is not only the consistently high standard of clinical care they deliver, but the way they look after relatives and one another through extremely challenging situations.
One long-term patient and their family described being fully included and informed at every stage of care. The relationship they built with staff was so strong that the patient came to feel like part of the team. That sense of trust, belonging and partnership reflects the approach colleagues bring to their work every day.
At the same time, the team maintained those standards while undertaking a complete unit move into an unfamiliar area — a major logistical and emotional challenge. They supported each other, adapted and continued to put patients first.
The Hairmyres ICU Team has been shortlisted because, even under intense pressure and significant change, they remain united, compassionate and committed to making every patient and family feel cared for and involved.
The NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
