In the lead-up to the NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals and teams shortlisted for this year’s awards.
Today, we are celebrating Iain Young, a Pastoral Care volunteer at University Hospital Hairmyres who brings patients something precious: hope.
Iain began volunteering in January 2024. The following year, serious illness resulted in a lower-leg amputation and a period away from the hospital.
His determination to return to volunteering as soon as his surgery and physiotherapy allowed deeply moved colleagues within the Spiritual Care team.
Today, Iain draws upon his own vulnerability and experience of recovery to support other amputees. He understands the fear, uncertainty and practical challenges they may be facing, creating a connection that is authentic and deeply trusted.
Where someone might see only a bleak future, Iain offers a real example of resilience, purpose and life beyond amputation.
His gentle and compassionate approach enables patients to speak openly, while his presence provides a level of understanding and motivation that cannot be taught from a textbook.
Iain has integrated volunteering back into his week not for recognition, but because he wants to help others move forward.
He has been shortlisted in recognition of the way he transformed a profound personal challenge into encouragement for others, becoming a beacon of hope for patients and colleagues alike.
The NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
