To celebrate Scotland’s Climate Week (28 September – 4 October 2026), NHS Lanarkshire’s Sustainability Team is inviting all staff to take part in their new Active Travel Challenge.
Craig Brown, Head of Sustainability & Environmental Performance and Heather Murray, Energy and Environment Officer within the Sustainability Team kickstarted the challenge and created a short video to demonstrate and encourage others to wheel, cycle, car share or use public transport to work and take part.
Committing to one singular day a month to the challenge of actively commuting can collectively support NHS Lanarkshire’s reduction in emissions and support a healthier and greener Lanarkshire.
This challenge is the team’s first manageable, and sustainable active travel push that recognises the challenges and restrictions faced in commuting to the working day.
Craig Brown, Head of Sustainability & Environmental Performance, NHS Lanarkshire, said: “We’re asking colleagues to think about how they travel, and how often they travel, using Climate Week to explore opportunities to make more sustainable choices. Whilst recognising the challenges staff face in choosing these active options, our Sustainability Team have created the monthly challenge.
“Whether it’s walking, wheeling, car sharing, using public transport, or a mix of option, even small changes can have a positive impact on both our environment and our health.”
