In the lead-up to the NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals and teams shortlisted for this year’s awards.
Today, we are celebrating Victoria McPhee, a registered nurse on Ward 8 at University Hospital Hairmyres and a role model for the colleagues and students around her.
Victoria helps newly qualified nurses feel welcomed and valued while encouraging them to grow in confidence and develop their skills.
She provides patient and constructive guidance on vascular surgery, medicines, procedures, paperwork and risk assessment. Her mentoring has strengthened clinical practice and shown others what outstanding nursing looks like.
One act in particular captures the depth of Victoria’s compassion. An end-of-life patient was frightened of dying alone, while family members living abroad were unable to arrive in time. Although it was her day off, Victoria came into the ward and remained with him throughout the day and night. She spoke with him about his life, favourite films and hobbies, and read to him, ensuring his final hours were not spent alone.
Victoria also regularly changes shifts supports colleagues whenever she can.
She has been shortlisted in recognition of care that is not limited by a rota or job description. Victoria teaches, unites and reassures those around her, while giving patients compassion and dignity when they need it most.
The NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
