In the lead-up to the NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals and teams shortlisted for this year’s awards.
Today, we are celebrating Ward 16 at University Hospital Wishaw for its innovative work to improve the journey of patients following a hip fracture.
The multidisciplinary team identified delays and variation within the existing pathway and worked together to redesign care around the needs of patients.
The new pathway has strengthened coordination between emergency care, orthopaedics, anaesthetics, theatre teams and rehabilitation services, creating a more streamlined and joined-up approach.
These improvements have reduced delays between admission and surgery, supported better patient flow and helped improve performance against national standards.
Faster access to surgery and rehabilitation also means patients can begin their recovery sooner, helping to reduce complications and improve their overall experience.
What makes this work stand out is the collaboration behind it. Staff have combined frontline experience with data to deliver meaningful and sustainable change while continuing to provide compassionate care within a busy and demanding environment.
The Ward 16 team has been shortlisted in recognition of its innovation, teamwork and commitment to improving care and outcomes for patients following a hip fracture.
The NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
