In the lead-up to the NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals and teams shortlisted for this year’s awards.
Today, we are celebrating Dr Mike Coates and the compassion, kindness and leadership he brings to NHS Lanarkshire’s Out of Hours service every day.
As Clinical Director, Mike is described by colleagues as someone who leads by example. He takes time to get to know people across the entire team, regardless of their role, helping staff feel seen, valued and supported.
Whether offering reassurance during difficult moments, sharing his clinical knowledge or simply checking in to ask how someone is doing, Mike’s impact reaches far beyond his job title.
That same compassion is at the heart of his patient care. Mike is especially recognised for the way he supports children and adults with additional communication needs.
This includes using Makaton to help autistic and non-verbal patients feel safe, comfortable and understood while receiving care.
Colleagues say his calm and approachable manner provides confidence during challenging situations, while his willingness to step in and help ensures patients receive the care they need.
Mike has been shortlisted in recognition of the empathy, inclusivity and commitment he demonstrates towards patients and colleagues alike.
The NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
