A ground-breaking study is being carried out in NHS Lanarkshire to analyse the workload associated with single bedrooms.

The observation study, starting this week, is being spearheaded by our project to provide the new, state-of-the-art University Hospital Monklands.

Fiona Cowan, Monklands Replacement Project clinical lead – nursing, explained: “The new hospital at Wester Moffat in Airdrie will support our forward-thinking clinical model, and workforce planning is integral to provide safe and effective patient care across all wards and departments.

“The new Monklands will have single en-suite bedrooms throughout, as required by Scottish Government policy. We’re keen to understand how single room design affects the workload of the various job roles to assist our understanding of staffing requirements for inpatient wards.”

The study will take place at University Hospital Wishaw’s medical assessment unit – a single-room ward – between 18 and 24 May.

Fiona added: “We want to learn about the workload across all the staff, so we’ll observe all roles.

“We’re also keen to meet and talk to colleagues in the unit throughout the study to get their views on workload associated with single room design and ward layout. The study output will be used to inform the new hospital workforce planning and we will share it for wider learning.”

This study is not associated with any current ongoing workforce analysis.
