New Sectra PACS coming to NHS Lanarkshire on 28 November

Nov 5, 2026

Staff who use radiology imaging as part of their role are being encouraged to prepare for the introduction of a new national Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS), which will go live across NHS Lanarkshire on Saturday 28 November 2026.

The new system, supplied by Sectra, will replace the current Philips PACS platform used across NHSScotland.

PACS is the system that allows clinicians and healthcare professionals to access, view, store and share radiology images such as X-rays, CT scans and MRI scans. It is used by more than 40,000 staff across Scotland and plays a vital role in patient diagnosis and care.

What will change?

Most staff who need to view patient images will use Sectra UniView, a modern web-based viewer that can be accessed through FirstPort and Clinical Portal. UniView allows staff to view patient images and associated information without needing specialist imaging software.

Staff who require more advanced imaging functionality, including radiologists and other specialist users, will use Sectra IDS7, which provides additional diagnostic and reporting tools.

The new PACS service brings a number of improvements, including:

  • Faster access to patient imaging and records.
  • Enhanced search and worklist functionality.
  • Improved integration and collaboration across NHS boards.
  • A single platform for both acute and breast screening imaging.
  • Modern cloud-based storage and resilience.
  • Enhanced reporting, analytics and image management tools.

Although the new system will provide familiar functions, the appearance of the software and some workflows will change.

All staff who use PACS or access radiology images as part of their role are asked to complete the available training before go-live. A short Sectra UniView introduction video is already available on FirstPort and provides an overview of the new system.

Additional learning resources are also available through:

  • Turas PACS eLearning modules.
  • The Sectra E-Learning Portal, which includes user guides, videos and role-specific training materials.
  • Local training sessions for staff who require advanced PACS functionality.

The new system has been designed to support future models of care, strengthen digital imaging services and provide a flexible platform that can continue to evolve alongside clinical services across Scotland
