In the lead-up to the NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals and teams shortlisted for this year’s awards.
Today, we are celebrating Jacqueline Symington, whose specialist expertise is helping patients at University Hospital Monklands receive essential intravenous treatments more quickly and comfortably.
Jacqueline combines two highly specialised roles in Interventional Radiology and Vascular Access. She is currently the only nurse within the hospital able to independently insert peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) lines.
This provides an essential service for patients who require intravenous treatments, including antibiotics, nutrition and chemotherapy. Jacqueline’s expertise helps reduce unnecessary delays, discomfort and potential disruption to their care.
However, colleagues say it is not only her specialist knowledge that makes Jacqueline stand out. She brings compassion, professionalism and reassurance to every patient, taking time to explain procedures and reduce anxiety during what can be a stressful experience.
Despite working under pressure, Jacqueline remains calm, approachable and supportive. She works closely with teams across the hospital while always keeping patient safety and dignity at the centre of her practice.
Jacqueline has been shortlisted in recognition of the significant impact her skill, reliability and willingness to go above and beyond have on patients and colleagues across the hospital.
The NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
Look out for our next finalist spotlight as we continue the countdown to the ceremony.
