In the lead-up to the NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals and teams shortlisted for this year’s awards.
The fifth finalist in our spotlight series is Charlotte Dowds, a long-standing Spiritual Care volunteer whose quiet and faithful presence has made a profound difference to patients over many years.
As a befriender, Charlotte offers patients something incredibly valuable: her time. Week after week, she sits with them, listens without judgement and creates space for the everyday emotions that can come with being in hospital – including loneliness, worry, frustration or simply the need for conversation.
Her support has made a significant difference to patients during some of their most difficult moments.
One patient facing a prolonged hospital stay with little family contact had become withdrawn and low in mood. Through Charlotte’s regular visits and gentle encouragement, they became more communicative and began to look forward to her arrival as a highlight of the week.
Charlotte’s reliability means chaplaincy colleagues can refer patients to her with complete confidence, knowing each person will be treated with warmth, kindness and dignity.
The scale of her contribution became even clearer to staff and patients during her recent absence after she broke her hip, highlighting just how valued her presence has become.
Charlotte has been shortlisted in recognition of her quietly transformative volunteering, which helps vulnerable patients feel seen, valued and less alone.
The NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
