In the lead-up to the NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals and teams shortlisted for this year’s awards.
The second finalist in our spotlight series is Dr Mihai Gherghe, a consultant gynaecologist whose determination has led to the creation of a specialist endometriosis service for women across NHS Lanarkshire.
After recognising that patients living with complex endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain and challenging surgical needs required a more specialised pathway, Dr Gherghe worked to transform the care available locally.
Through sustained effort, he developed a dedicated clinic, improved referral routes and introduced specialist ultrasound scanning to identify complex cases more accurately. This can help patients avoid unnecessary MRI scans and reduce delays before surgery.
Dr Gherghe also established combined operating lists, enabling more patients to receive treatment closer to home rather than facing lengthy referrals to services elsewhere.
Most recently, he introduced minimally invasive robotic surgery for endometriosis, helping to improve the surgical options and outcomes available to patients across Lanarkshire.
His commitment extends beyond clinical care. Dr Gherghe has developed his specialist expertise using his own time and resources, led training for consultants and registrars, and shared the service’s work at national and international conferences.
His passion and determination have turned an unmet need into a growing specialist service, giving patients living with a frequently misunderstood condition better access to care, greater confidence and renewed hope.
The NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
