To mark Dietitians Week (1-5), we focus on the role of dietitians – the only nutrition professionals regulated by law in the UK trained to turn scientific evidence into practical, person-centred care. Every day they support patients, staff and communities to improve health through better nutrition. Dietitians Week is a chance to recognise the impact of their work across our hospitals and wider health services.
- Supporting patients when it matters most
Dietitians play a key role when patients are unable to eat well due to illness, reduced appetite or swallowing difficulties. They assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of nutritional issues, from malnutrition to complex medical conditions, using the British Dietetics Association Model and Process. A ‘food-first’ approach is always prioritised, focusing on meals, snacks and simple strategies such as fortification before considering oral nutritional supplements, or more advanced interventions like enteral or parenteral nutrition. Evidence shows that timely nutritional support improves recovery, reduces complications and shortens hospital stays.
- Work across the healthcare system
Dietitians contribute across hospital wards, outpatient clinics, community services and public health programmes. Their work extends from direct patient care to supporting staff education, service development and research. They also help address wider challenges such as malnutrition, obesity and food insecurity, while contributing to improvements in hospital food standards and food product reformulation to reduce salt and sugar. This ensures nutrition care remains evidence-based, practical and relevant across settings.
- Impact for patients and the NHS
Dietetics delivers clear value for both patients and healthcare services. For every £1 invested in dietetic services, up to £10 can be saved through reduced admissions, shorter hospital stays and improved long-term outcomes. Most importantly, this reflects better outcomes for patients, supporting recovery, independence and quality of life.
Kyle Kennedy, dietitian, department of nutrition and dietetics, University Hospital Wishaw, said: “As dietitians, we combine clinical expertise with practical problem-solving and compassion to make a meaningful difference every day. As we mark Dietitians Week, it is an opportunity to recognise the vital role we play across our hospitals”.
