The Volunteering Team, Erin and Karen, are getting a Big Shout Out for the dignity and respect they bring to every aspect of their work, and for the vital role they play in supporting patients, volunteers and staff across NHS Lanarkshire.
Erin and Karen are responsible for recruiting, training, managing and supporting volunteers right across the organisation. Behind every volunteer you see supporting patients on wards, welcoming people into our hospitals, or offering an extra moment of kindness, there is careful planning, guidance and support from this small but dedicated team.
At the heart of their work is a deep respect for people — both those who volunteer their time and the patients who benefit from it. Erin and Karen take the time to ensure volunteers feel valued, prepared and confident in their roles, matching individuals to opportunities where they can make the greatest difference while maintaining clear boundaries, safety and professionalism.
Through structured recruitment, thorough training and ongoing support, the Volunteering Team ensures that volunteers are equipped to provide meaningful, compassionate and respectful support to patients and families. This additional support plays a huge part in enhancing patient experience, offering reassurance, companionship and practical help alongside clinical care.
Erin and Karen also work closely with services across NHS Lanarkshire to understand where volunteers can add value and how roles can be developed safely and inclusively. Their approach recognises the dignity of patients and the importance of creating environments where everyone feels listened to, respected and supported.
Often working quietly behind the scenes, the impact of the Volunteering Team is felt every day across our hospitals and services. Their work enables volunteers to make a real difference, while ensuring patients receive care that recognises them as individuals.
This Big Shout Out recognises Erin and Karen for living NHS Lanarkshire’s value of Dignity and Respect — through their commitment to people, their attention to detail, and their belief in the power of volunteers to enhance the care we provide.
