SPOTLIGHT

International Day of the Midwife

May 5, 2026

Today every midwife across Lanarkshire and beyond is being offered thanks from NHS Lanarkshire’s Executive Nurse Director ahead of International Day of the Midwife.

Trudi Marshall, Executive Nurse Director has offered a personal thank you to midwives for their contribution to care of women and their babies over the years and their vital role in bringing new life into the world.

Trudi said: “Midwives throughout Lanarkshire, and indeed the world, have made an enormous contribution to the NHS and deserve to have a day dedicated to them.

“The role of midwives during pregnancy and childbirth is truly complex, extending far beyond simply delivering babies. Every day, midwives provide unwavering care to women, offering support, expertise, and compassion throughout every stage of pregnancy and childbirth.

“Without their dedication and tireless efforts, the NHS simply could not deliver the high standard of maternity care that families in our community rely on. Their professionalism and commitment deserve our deepest admiration.

“I am proud of our midwifery team in Lanarkshire. Their dedicated and expertise continue to leave a profound impact on the lives of mothers and babies, ensuring safe and healthy transitions into parenthood.

“I would like to offer my deepest appreciation and thanks to all our midwifery colleagues across Lanarkshire on their day of recognition. I am grateful to them all and the immense value they add to NHS Lanarkshire every day.”
