NHS Lanarkshire is undertaking a structured review of Assistant Practitioner (AP) roles within nursing teams – with a clear and simple purpose: to listen.
The review will gather feedback from Healthcare Support Workers, Assistant Practitioners and trainee Assistant Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Senior Charge Nurses, Team Leaders, Senior Nurses and Service Managers.
Importantly, colleagues do not need to currently work with an Assistant Practitioner to take part. Perspectives from those who have worked alongside APs previously – or not at all – are equally valuable.
This review is guided by real experiences, not assumptions or preplanned conclusions. It is an opportunity to understand how AP roles are experienced across teams, what is working well, where there may be variation, and how we plan thoughtfully for the future.
The Assistant Practitioner development team explains why your voice matters: “Assistant Practitioners are an important part of our nursing workforce. It’s vital that we take the time to understand how these roles are experienced across different teams and settings.
This review is about listening carefully and respectfully. We want honest feedback — what’s working, what feels unclear, and where support may be needed. That insight helps us make balanced, evidence-based decisions that support patient care and our staff.”
All eligible staff are invited to complete a MS Forms survey aligned to their current role. We have included links below. The survey is structured to ensure feedback from each group can be understood clearly and fairly.
In addition, a series of Focus Groups will take place in late Spring 2026. These sessions are open to anyone who would like to explore their views in more depth.
You can register your interest by emailing ap.pdcenquiries@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk.
Feedback gathered will inform future workforce planning and development in a measured and supportive way.
This is about learning together – and strengthening our nursing teams for the future.
