Following on from our first-ever Sustainability Conference last year, we’re taking further positive steps to build on our commitment to a greener future.

In the last year alone, many of you have helped us to improve on and develop a number of initiatives to make a difference including:

  • continued identification and investment in energy efficiency and carbon reduction projects saw us meet (exceed) the Scottish Government target of 56 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and are on track to meet the 2030 target;
  • a sustainability and climate change strategy is being finalised setting out our plans for net-zero by 2045 at the latest;
  • improved active travel facilities such as cycle shelters and bike repair stands installed across hospital sites;
  • improvement in the national sustainability assessment tool score from 40 per cent to 55 per cent;
  • Further engagement with frontline staff, working to improve sustainability in theatres, wards and other frontline areas.

Marie Porteous, head of sustainability and environment, said: “Lanarkshire is a great place to live and work. As one of the biggest employers in the area – and working alongside our partners – all of us can ensure we have a massive positive impact on our environment and our future.

“I’m exceptionally proud of our progress over the past year, despite the challenges of Covid-19 and we will continue to play our role in driving down our carbon footprint.

“We know it won’t be easy. Along the way, everyone needs to play their role in proactively looking at new ways of working in a more environmentally-friendly way.

“Many of you are considering how you can play your part and I know a lot of you have already started implementing positive changes. That is wonderful to see as it is central to our ability to make the changes we need.

“I’m confident that by all of us working with each other, our partners and our communities, we can ensure Lanarkshire is a greener, healthier and happier place.

“Ultimately, each of us has the opportunity to make a real difference to our organisation, our people and our planet.”
