Tribute to Craig Cunningham on his retirement

Sep 3, 2025

Colleagues from across NHS Lanarkshire and beyond gathered on Friday for a special retirement event to celebrate the remarkable career of Craig Cunningham.

The incredible size of the turnout at South Lanarkshire Council’s HQ was a clear reflection of the many lives and careers Craig has touched – and the mark he has made – over more than four decades of service.

True to form, Craig couldn’t resist the chance to run one final PowerPoint presentation and, as ever, he had his audience eating out of his hands with his trademark storytelling and a powerful message about how everyone has a role to play in leading and embracing change in the service of the public good. Laughter, fond memories and heartfelt thanks filled the room as colleagues came together to celebrate his contribution.

Craig retires after an outstanding 44 years in the NHS, 38 of them here in Lanarkshire. He began his NHS career as an Area Trainee in Glasgow in 1981 then embarking on a career in NHS Lanarkshire at University Hospital Hairmyres in 1987.

Craig then went on to hold a range of senior roles, most recently serving as Head of Commissioning and Performance within the South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership.

Alongside his professional leadership, Craig has also been a tireless advocate for those who served our country, acting as NHS Lanarkshire’s Armed Forces and Veterans Champion. His purposeful work with veterans – rooted in dignity, respect and understanding – made him a hugely valued and trusted voice within that community.

Paying tribute Professor Soumen Sengupta, Chief Officer of South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “Institutions inevitably reflect the values of the people who work within them, and Craig has embodied the very best of NHS Scotland’s values every single day of his working life.

“He has always led with integrity and compassion, humility and a quiet strength. My thanks to Craig for his dedicated service, unwavering commitment and his humour. He has left an indelible mark, and we wish him and his family all the very best for the future.”

Reflecting on his career, Craig said: “It has been an immense privilege to work in the NHS and to spend the majority of my career here in Lanarkshire. I have been fortunate to work alongside outstanding colleagues, united in a shared commitment to improving people’s lives.

“The support and friendships I have experienced over the years have meant a great deal, and I will always be grateful for them. I now look forward to spending more time with my family and enjoying this next chapter.”

Craig is especially looking forward to spending more time with his wife Fiona and son Greig.
