Mental Health and Wellbeing

Rainbow in blue sky
Our mental health and wellbeing can influence how we think and feel about ourselves, others and our environment. At the same time, our environment and other stressors can impact our mental health and wellbeing (e.g. our physical health problems, money worries, relationship difficulties).

When we are working to maintain or lose weight, it is important that we consider the impact of our mental health and wellbeing on our health behaviours, and access support if we need it.

Physical and Mental Health

Our physical and mental health can impact our eating behaviours and activity levels (e.g. if we are feeling low in mood, we may struggle with our motivation to make healthy changes, or turn to eating foods high in sugar to make ourselves feel better), and when we are struggling with making changes, this in turn can impact on how we think, feel and behave.

Below are examples of useful self-help resources for mental health and well-being that we would recommend if you feel you would like to access support:

Guide to Healthy Mind Healthy Weight Talks, by Dr Mira Mojee, Clinical Psychologist, May 2022

Access Healthy Weight Talks
What are the Healthy Mind Healthy Weight Talks (HMHW)?
The HMHW talks were created by Clinical Psychologists working in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Weight Management Service They are roughly 1-2 hours in length and based on the most common psychological difficulties that people may encounter in weight management.

How can they help me?
A lot of people can start to make changes and help themselves through learning more about their difficulties, through something called psychoeducation. These talks are intended to be information only, and provide self-help skills and strategies taken from evidence-based approaches to treating common psychological difficulties (such as cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and compassion-focused therapy). This might be all the support you need to feel better.

What if I need more help?
Sometimes people might need more support and guidance to make changes, or overcome their difficulties, from a mental health practitioner or psychologist. This might have been arranged for you by your weight management clinician, or if not, and you feel you need more support beyond the talks, please let your clinician know and they can speak about a referral. As the talks were made in Glasgow, on this web page are local services in NHS Lanarkshire that you can contact if you want to access further support about certain topics.

Access the talks.
