Going For a Breast X-ray (Mammogram)
What is a Breast X-ray (mammogram)?

An x-ray of your breast is called a mammogram.

It checks for any small changes in your breast that may show cancer.

A mammogram is done at a mobile breast screening bus.

You will receive a letter with an appointment to go to the nearest breast screening bus.
What will I wear?

It will be easier if you wear a blouse.

But you can wear a jumper.

You will be asked to take off your bra.
Having your Breast X-ray (mammogram)

The x-ray machine can be uncomfortable or painful for some women.

You will have to keep very still while the x-ray is taken.

If you want to stop at anytime tell the nurse.

You can then go home.

After a few weeks you will get a letter with the results.

If your test is okay, you will have another mammogram in 3 years.

Sometimes the test doesn’t work and may need to be done again.
If something is wrong it may need to be done again.

Phone your doctor to talk about this.
