Urogynaecology Team Wins Innovation Award for Pioneering Outpatient Care

Nov 12, 2024

We are proud to announce that the Urogynaecology Team at NHS Lanarkshire has been awarded the Innovation Award at the 2024 Staff Awards. This prestigious recognition celebrates the team’s cutting-edge approach to Urogynaecological service, significantly enhancing patient care and experience while improving clinical efficiency.

Since late 2019, the Urogynaecology Team has transformed the delivery of minimally invasive procedures to the outpatient setting, becoming the first team in Scotland to do so. Their innovative approach has not only improved patient care but also reduced theatre costs and increased access to essential surgical services.

Dr Adeeb A Hassan, Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Clinical Lead for Urogynaecology & e-health, said: “We are incredibly honoured to receive this award, which reflects the dedication and hard work of the entire Urogynaecology Team. Our focus has always been on delivering the best possible care for our patients, and by moving these procedures to an outpatient setting, we’ve been able to improve both the patient experience and the efficiency of our services. We’re especially proud of the positive feedback we’ve received from patients, who feel empowered by the choices they have in their care.”

Patient satisfaction remains a testament to the team’s success, with 90% of patients reporting they were extremely satisfied with their care, and 100% stating they would opt for the same outpatient setting again. Additionally, no patients have had to abandon their procedures, and there have been no intraoperative or postoperative complications.

The clinic’s efficiency also delivers substantial savings, with procedures like Urethral Bulking Agent Injection saving around £1,000 per patient and freeing up valuable theatre capacity. This innovation has proven particularly vital during the post-COVID recovery period, when theatre access was limited.

The team’s pioneering pathway incorporates rigorous post-procedure monitoring and continuous improvements, ensuring a safe and effective service. Their work has earned national recognition, with other health boards referring patients to Lanarkshire for treatment, underscoring the high standards of care provided.

In addition to their achievements in patient care, the team has shared their expertise by collaborating with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, supporting the establishment of similar outpatient clinics. Their commitment to continuous improvement through auditing processes ensures they remain leaders in clinical excellence.

This Innovation Award highlights the Urogynaecology Team’s forward-thinking approach and their outstanding contribution to advancing patient care and service efficiency, setting a new benchmark in healthcare.
