Following another fantastic NHS Lanarkshire Staff Health and Wellbeing Week, it’s time to highlight the amazing staff members, organisations, and volunteers that arranged fantastic on-site events at University Hospital Wishaw. We would like to thank you for giving the on-site team a good boost, they deserve special recognition.
A staff member described the amazing Reiki therapy sessions given by Ward 7 Senior Charge Nurse Veronica Fearon as “very relaxing, I felt like I was a million miles away”. Reiki enhances general health and wellbeing by encouraging relaxation, reducing stress, and relieving symptoms. It has the potential to induce a state of meditation and encourage bone and tissue mending following surgery or trauma.
Staff members were really impressed with Lorna Ravell from Canine Concern, the Therapet volunteers, and their beautiful dogs, one staff member even said their presence made the “best Monday ever!”. Being with animals has been shown in numerous studies to enhance emotions and lower the risk of depression. According to other research, dogs in particular can help reduce depressive and anxious symptoms while also promoting physical exercise.
The crochet and chat session led by Frankii Dunn from Lucia’s Fig Tree and Angela Johnstone from VASLAN was a hit amongst the staff. Newcomers to knitting and crocheting were invited to participate in the workshop, where they made ‘twiddlemuffs’, which are intended to keep dementia patients’ hands busy and engaged. Please submit finished ‘twiddlemuffs’ to Max Huttner, Management Suite, Level 3 in January 2024 for any Wishaw employees that attended the session.
Everyone was very grateful for the delicious smoothies that Helen Brown, Donna, Mandy, and the catering staff prepared and provided to the staff members in the Atrium. Studies have shown that eating a clean diet high in whole, unprocessed foods can help reduce feelings of anxiety and despair.
Once again, we would like to express our gratitude to these individuals for supporting NHS Lanarkshire Staff Health and Wellbeing Week and making it possible.
