Celebrations at hospital’s first staff awards

Nov 14, 2025

There was a morning of celebration at the inuagural staff awards for University Hospital Hairmyres and its close partner, Stonehouse Hospital.

The Hairmyres and Proud event saw an audience of over 120 colleagues gather to pay tribute to the clinical and non-clinical nominees and winners of nine awards.

Paul Graham, Head of Spiritual Care and Wellbeing, had the crowd in fits of laughter with a stream of humorous reflections on life at Hairmyres as he presided as master of ceremonies

Hairmyres Chief Nurse Lise Axford explained: “We decided to set up these awards and this celebration day just to recognise the work of the whole hospital, individuals and teams as well.

“Everyone works tirelessly each and every day, and often we focus on the negatives rather than all the positives, the great work, the leadership, the positive environment, the unsung heroes – all the different categories.

“We felt that it was about time that we celebrated everything that is good about Hairmyres and Stonehouse hospitals.

“We had dozens of nominations across the categories so it was hard to choose anybody to win an award.”

Margaret Meek, Hairmyres Director of Hospital Services, added: “It’s been brilliant to bring teams together so we can recognise the contributions that every team and individual makes.

“We’ve had frontline staff and backroom staff, and together we’ve had a fantastic day celebrating the positivity that exists in Hairmyres – recognising the challenges, but also the support we give each other every day.

“As was said in one of the presentations, it’s always unpredictable but we get through it by working together.

“It was brilliant seeing so many people nominated. To the winners of the individual categories, well done. It’s great to see you be recognised but behind every winner there is a whole team that has supported them.

“That’s why the event was so great, to bring the teams together and celebrate what is positive in Hairmyres and what makes us so proud to work here and serve the population of this locality.”
