University Hospital Monklands will play host to a dedicated Transfusion Awareness Week in August.
The week, which will be held from 28 August to 1 September, will provide ongoing support to staff involved in blood transfusion at the hospital.
The week will see a suite of focussed activities occurring throughout the hospital including stands providing educational resource packs.
The packs include information on consent and sampling for transfusions, blood component collection, traceability, pre-administration checking, major haemorrhage and transfusion reactions.
Moira Caldwell, Transfusion Practitioner, said: “The week will help to improve the knowledge of transfusions to a wide range of staff.
“As part of the week, blood bank staff are inviting all staff across the hospital to have a tour of the laboratory.
“For those who attend, there will be a raffle where you can win a hamper of goodies.
“We also have a consultant haematologist who will be doing teaching sessions with the hospitals FY1’s and the Blood Bank Manager will be carrying out Q&A sessions with porters.”
Staff interested in booking an appointment to tour the laboratory can contact Michelle Kay on michelle.kay@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or 01355 584327.
