SPOTLIGHT

Transformation work highlighted at University Hospital Monklands

Jun 6, 2024

A range of successes were spotlighted at the latest meeting of the executive flow oversight board (EFOB), held at University Hospital Monklands.

This follows the recent EFOB held at University Hospital Wishaw and future meetings will continue to rotate across the three acute hospitals.

The key objective of EFOB is to oversee and connect the various strands of priority work across the health board and the partnerships, to bring performance improvement, enhanced patient safety and even greater staff wellbeing.

EFOB’s aim is to oversee and monitor the improvement work within NHS Lanarkshire and the two university health and social care partnerships, focusing on three priority areas:

  • Managing demand
  • Maintaining a positive admission and discharge balance
  • Maximising output.

Stephen Peebles, University Hospital Monklands director of hospital services, said: “We were pleased to share details and progress of the ongoing transformation work whilst also recognising the challenges and the need for further improvement to ensure the best care for our patients and working environment for our team.

“Our six-step model aims to help improve patient care and experience as well as staff experience and wellbeing.

“This will be achieved by focusing on keeping people well at home, the flow navigation centre, improving ED and the front door model, improving ward and system flow, discharge without delay and data driven control hub and escalation.

“We have already commenced professional to professional frailty referrals as of the start of May, as part of our aim to increase utilisation of community services and improve co-ordination of frail patient admissions and avoid long waits for beds in ED.

“We are also improving our minor injuries pathway as part of the front-door model, including the introduction of a priority lane for patients who have had a phone/virtual consultation.

“Wards 14 and 20 have launched a pilot project with North H&SCP on non-prescriptive homecare approach with the aim of reducing delays to discharge with homecare. All patients clinically ready for discharge will be discharged and assessed at home on the same day with a prescribed homecare package in place.

“We will continue to strive towards achieving improvements both for patients and staff and I’d like to thank all the team at Monklands for the excellent work thus far.”
