The Learning and Organisational Development Team is getting a Big Shout Out for the quality and teamwork they demonstrate in developing leaders across NHS Lanarkshire, and for the lasting impact this is having across the organisation.
The team has completely transformed leadership development, taking a strategic and collaborative approach to building capability at every level. Recognising the need for a more sustainable and tailored offer, they worked together to bring leadership development in-house — replacing costly external licences with programmes designed specifically for NHS Lanarkshire and its people.
In its second year, the team doubled the number of participants enrolled in leadership programmes compared with when these were delivered by an external provider. Demand for places remains strong and continues to be driven by positive word of mouth from past participants.
Working as a small but highly effective team, they have developed a clear leadership framework aligned to our culture and values. This includes Essentials of Leadership and Management (ELM) ; Forging Influence and Responsibility (FIR); and Organisational Alliances and Kinship (OAK), launched in 2025, . These programmes ensure leadership support is available for a range of levels, and continues to evolve in line with organisational needs.
What sets this work apart is the quality of design and the strong sense of teamwork behind it. Each programme has been carefully shaped using internal expertise, organisational insight and feedback from participants.
The results have been clear, with consistently positive feedback and many colleagues progressing into promoted roles as a direct result of their learning and development.
Alongside these programmes, the team has shown real innovation through the creation of the Leadership and Management Zone on Microsoft Teams. This space provides bite-sized, on-demand learning content and creates opportunities for leaders to connect, share experiences and learn from one another — strengthening leadership practice across the organisation.
Despite being a relatively small team, the impact of their work has been significant. Their approach has attracted interest from other NHS Boards, with the leadership framework and online learning zone being showcased nationally as examples of good practice.
This Big Shout Out recognises the Learning and Organisational Development Team for living NHS Lanarkshire’s value of Quality and Teamwork — working collaboratively, thinking strategically and delivering high-quality development that is shaping the future of leadership across the organisation.
