Supporting the health and wellbeing of refugees and asylum seekers

Feb 12, 2024

We now have a dedicated section on FirstPort aimed at providing information for staff on the health and wellbeing of refugees and asylum seekers.

This comes in response to the growing recognition of the unique challenges faced by these vulnerable populations and the need for tailored support within our healthcare services.

Refugees and asylum seekers, individuals forced to flee their homes due to persecution, conflict, or violence, often arrive in their host countries with complex physical and mental health needs.

Accessing healthcare services can be daunting, compounded by cultural and language barriers.

An online staff survey enabled us to gain insights into their experiences in supporting refugees and asylum seekers. Importantly, it highlighted the need for enhanced training and resources to better serve these populations.

Susan Lyttle, health improvement manager for the health and wellbeing of refugees and asylum seekers, said: “Thank you to everyone who completed our survey; the feedback led us to launching a comprehensive landing page on FirstPort.

“This page aims to centralise essential information, ensuring that colleagues have access to up-to-date resources to support the delivery of healthcare services to resettled populations. Our goal is to equip staff with the knowledge and tools needed to provide compassionate and effective care to refugees and asylum seekers.

“This resource hub offers information on the rights of refugees and asylum seekers, available resources, and guidance on how staff can effectively support these individuals.

“Importantly, it provides details on accessing interpreters and translated materials to address language barriers that can impede access to care.

“I’d encourage all staff members to explore the health and wellbeing of refugees and asylum seekers section on FirstPort. Together, we can work towards building a more inclusive and supportive healthcare environment for all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances.”
