Almost 40 members of staff working in primary care recently attended an education day in the Medical Education Centre, Kirklands to learn more about musculoskeletal (MSK) assessment and management, along with the range of resources available to patients.
Delegates at the fully-booked session included GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists and Occupational Therapists. The day provided information on the different options to help patients manage MSK conditions, including; leisure referrals to help improve physical activity levels, Versus Arthritis, MSK website, Phio digital platform, Physio MSK service and Community Appointment Days.
Attendees also had the opportunity to get hands-on and improve their skills in assessing and managing patients with the most common MSK conditions which present in primary care. These include issues in the hip, lumbar spine, shoulder and knee.
Brian Slattery, Acting Physiotherapy MSK Strategy Lead, said: “Many thanks to Dr Jennifer Gibson for inviting us to provide an MSK update for our colleagues in primary care. The course was very popular and the feedback we received demonstrated the excellent teaching ability of our clinicians and their enthusiasm for further enhancing our collaboration with primary care.”
Dr Jennifer Gibson, Associate Medical Director, South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership, added: “I would like to thank Brian and his team for the great deal of work and planning that they put into this informative education day. The feedback we’ve received has been very positive and we’ve also received areas to focus on going forward. We hope to have more education days in the future to continue our work sharing learning and knowledge between primary care colleagues, and the wider healthcare team.”
