Congratulations go to Lesley Bowman, staff nurse, ward 18, University Hospital Wishaw (UHW), who recently received the staff GREATix of the Month Award.
Lesley’s submission from Gail Richardson, head of pharmacy at UHW, stated: “Lesley queried an excessive dose of medication with the on-call pharmacist which may have caused harm to a patient. This is a great example of chance to check in practice and thanks to Lesley’s knowledge, skills and good practice, the patient was given the correct dose.
“It is important to utilise this example for further teaching with junior prescribes from all disciplines and ensure all nursing staff are aware of the five rights of medication administration”.
Lesley was presented with the award by Kim Brown, deputy chief nurse, and Amy Liouanne, charge nurse, who recognised Lesley’s excellence and good practice in her role as a nurse on the ward.
Kim said: “Lesley applied her clinical knowledge and experience in this situation which resulted in a drug error being prevented. Her curiosity and questioning showed attention to detail and a great example of best practice in action. I would encourage Lesley to continue to share her knowledge and skills and promote a safe environment for our patients to be cared for.”
