In the lead-up to the NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals and teams shortlisted for this year’s awards.
The sixth finalist in our spotlight series is Hugh Findlay – known affectionately as Shug – a pharmacy storekeeper at University Hospital Monklands whose contribution extends far beyond his formal role.
Hugh began his NHS Lanarkshire career as a hospital porter, bringing the experience, strong work ethic and positive attitude he developed in that role into the pharmacy service.
He now acts as an important link between portering and pharmacy colleagues, helping new staff understand the service and ensuring work continues to flow smoothly.
Although employed within the stores team, Hugh is always ready to support distribution and procurement colleagues when pressures build. His accuracy and attention to detail are particularly valuable when handling medicines safely.
Hugh has also become an exceptional mentor to Project SEARCH participants, some of whom are entering the workplace for the first time. Through patience, encouragement and practical guidance, he helps participants learn new skills, build their confidence and feel that they belong.
Colleagues describe Hugh as someone who is friendly to everyone, regardless of their role or band, and who brings humour to the workplace alongside his skill and professionalism.
Hugh has been shortlisted in recognition of the reliability, ambition and generosity he brings to the pharmacy team – and the way he helps others succeed alongside him.
The NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
