In the lead-up to the NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals and teams shortlisted for this year’s awards.
Today, we are celebrating Denise Bryce and Wendy Morrison, whose extraordinary act of compassion created a treasured memory for a patient and their family.
When a patient receiving end-of-life care in the Coronary Care Unit and Medical High Dependency Unit at University Hospital Wishaw expressed a wish to marry their partner, Denise and Wendy were determined to make it possible.
They took the lead in organising a wedding within the unit, bringing colleagues together and transforming a clinical environment into a place filled with love, dignity and celebration.
Staff volunteered their own time, adapted the unit safely and supported the couple and their family throughout an incredibly emotional day.
Thanks to Denise and Wendy’s compassion and determination, the patient was able to experience comfort and joy surrounded by the people who mattered most.
Denise and Wendy recognised that excellent care is not only about meeting someone’s clinical needs. It is also about listening to what matters most to them and doing everything possible to honour their wishes.
They have been shortlisted in recognition of the kindness, dedication and humanity they showed in creating memories that this family will carry with them forever.
The NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
