Since November 2023, volunteer ward helper Simon Hall has brought humanity and hope to Vascular Ward 8 at University Hospital Hairmyres.
Since November 2023, Simon has been offering calm reassurance and peer support to vascular patients facing amputation. As an amputee himself, he shares his lived experience with quiet empathy, showing people what’s possible after life-changing surgery — and helping them see themselves not as patients, but as people with a future.
Whether he’s topping up water, fetching a paper or simply listening, Simon brings warmth, dignity and compassion to every bedside. His unhurried chats invite people to open up, easing fear and building confidence when it’s needed most.
Described by nurses as “an extra pair of empathetic hands,” Simon also supports new volunteers, modelling the power of connection in care.
