For patients on Wards 15 and 16 at University Hospital Hairmyres, few things lift the mood like a visit from Joe Murdoch — and now the much-loved volunteer has been named a finalist in the 2025 NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards.
Since August 2024, Joe has dedicated his Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays to the wards, bringing warmth, humour and companionship to people far from home comforts. Whether fetching water, telling stories or simply listening, Joe’s presence turns bedsides into places of connection — lifting spirits and easing anxieties with dignity and compassion.
His impact is deeply personal. After losing his wife and facing his own health struggles, Joe found purpose through volunteering. Even a mini stroke in early 2025 didn’t keep him away for long. He returned with the same easy smile and commitment to making a difference.
Joe’s kindness, resilience and ability to brighten the room make him a vital part of the ward team — and a shining example of what volunteering can mean.
