Since May 2023, Gordon Brown has been a reassuring presence at the front door of University Hospital Wishaw — and now he’s been recognised as a finalist in the 2025 NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards.
As a Meet and Greet volunteer stationed at the main entrance, Gordon offers more than directions. He brings calm, kindness and gentle humour to every interaction, helping patients and visitors feel at ease the moment they arrive. Whether deciphering appointment slips or guiding someone through an unfamiliar building, he does it with patience, dignity and respect.
Colleagues say Gordon is always dependable, often staying on when the foyer is busy and stepping up to support new volunteers as a buddy. He even created a detailed clinic-to-landmark directory using Excel — now used daily — to improve wayfinding for everyone.
Through warmth, initiative and a deep sense of care, Gordon turns a simple welcome into a powerful act of compassion.
