A calm presence, a clear vision and an open door — that’s the leadership style of Dr Fong Lau, Consultant Interventional Radiologist at University Hospital Hairmyres, and the latest finalist in this year’s NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards.
For the past two years, Dr Lau has quietly transformed the radiology service at Hairmyres, bringing stability, morale and innovation back to a team still feeling the impact of the pandemic. His colleagues credit him with personally recruiting more radiologists than the department had managed in the previous decade, retaining valued staff and lifting team spirit to new heights.
Under his leadership, the department has introduced a 24/7 stroke thrombectomy imaging pathway, launched a new Cardiac CT service, and restarted vital cardiology projects. He tailors job plans, mentors new staff and promotes teamwork at every turn.
Described as kind, supportive and always present when needed, Dr Lau leads with dignity, respect and compassion — for both his patients and his colleagues.
