In the lead-up to the NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards 2026, we are shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals and teams shortlisted for this year’s awards.
Today, we are celebrating Diane Kane, whose work has transformed how the Tertiary Eating Disorder Specialist Service supports autistic and neurodivergent patients.
Diane recognised that traditional treatment pathways were not meeting everyone’s needs. Some patients were struggling to engage, not because they lacked motivation, but because services and interventions had not been designed with neurodivergence in mind.
She brought the multidisciplinary team together to review assessment, communication, sensory needs and treatment.
Under Diane’s leadership, the team developed sensory packs, communication passports, accessible resources, simpler language and pictorial materials. She also helped create an environment where adjustments – from reduced lighting to sensory tools – became part of everyday inclusive care.
After years of determined work, the Tertiary Eating Disorder Specialist Service became the first NHS service in Scotland to achieve the National Autistic Society’s Autism Specialist Award accreditation.
Diane has been shortlisted in recognition of an achievement that goes far beyond securing accreditation. Her leadership has helped change culture, remove barriers and create sustainable, compassionate improvements that will benefit patients, families and staff for years to come.
The NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
