Senior Team Visit METC

Oct 22, 2024

NHS Lanarkshire is leading the way on medical education and training nowhere more so than in the Ken Corsar Medical Education Training Centre (METC).

METC is at the heart of shaping our medical and clinical staff of the future and last week a number of our senior team and the Board Vice Chair, Ally Boyle, visited the METC for a walkabout and to hear about the training and support provided to, not only Lanarkshire medical and clinical trainees, but trainees from across Scotland.

Dr Ian Hunter, Director of Medical Education gave a presentation on the breadth of training and learning that takes place in the centre and the support provided in the work place.

The Board Vice Chair, Ally Boyle, is a keen advocate of training and learning.  He is on the Board of NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and was extremely interested to hear how the centre provides training and learning to trainees from across Scotland and that many other Boards are keen to replicate the centre.

Ally added: “I was really impressed by the level of enthusiasm of the staff in the centre, particularly Catherine Paton, the Associate Director of Medical Education.  Her passion for offering our future clinical and medical staff access to the very best training and learning is evident in her dedication to the centre.

“I was really struck by the centre’s focus on the trainees, not only on their education but their overall wellbeing.”

Dr Chris Deighan, NHS Lanarkshire’s Executive Medical Director was also on the walkabout.  He said: “The Ken Corsar Medical Education Training Centre is responsible for developing and delivering healthcare education and training for not only NHS Lanarkshire’s medical and clinical trainees, but for other health boards in Scotland.

“Having the right numbers of trained staff in the right place, at the right time is key to delivering better health and better care and the centre plays a Scotland-wide role in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development.”
