District nurse Elaine Britton is retiring after almost 44 years of service. Elaine began her training in Monklands Hospital in 1979, she then qualified in 1980 and worked in the Intensive Care unit within the hospital.
Before opting to undertake a life-altering journey across the world, Elaine had worked in a number of places around Lanarkshire and completed her district nurse training in Aberdeen. Elaine decided to live and work in New Zealand after having her first son and daughter.
Elaine worked with Access 24 while she was residing in New Zealand, managing international evacuations of people. During this period, Elaine added a second boy to her family. Shortly after, she began working for Southern Cross in the private healthcare industry.
Before deciding to move back to Scotland, Elaine worked in a few small care facilities while she was living abroad. She then went back to work for NHS Lanarkshire in Monklands for a while on the oncology wards. Elaine had a temporary job in Central in 2003 before landing a permanent position there in 2004. Elaine continued working in Cumbernauld after the birth of her second daughter and briefly relocated to Kilsyth before ultimately returning to Cumbernauld, where she has remained since 2020.
Both her patients and her team adore Elaine, and she will be sorely missed. Her staff sends her best wishes for a joyous retirement.
