Refer local families to GOALS (Getting Our Active Lifestyle Started)

GOALS is launching a new community based programme for children and young people (CYP) between 4-17 years old.

This family based healthy lifestyle programme provides support for children, young people and their fam​ilies.

The programme will run in 10 week blocks and children/young people with a BMI greater than or equal to 91st Centile​ can be referred by completing this GOALS Referrer Form and emailing it to Dr Elinor Steel, Child Healthy Weight & Child and Young Person Weight Management Coordinator: Elinor.Steel@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk. You can also download and print the GOALS staff poster for your staff.

The first blocks will take place at:

  • North Lanarkshire – starts Saturday 9th Sept, 9.30am – 11am, Townhead Community Centre, Townhead Road, Coatbridge, ML5 2HT.
  • South Lanarkshire – starts Monday 11th Sept, 4pm – 5.30pm, Carluke Leisure Centre, 135 Carnwath Road, Carluke, ML8 4EA.

However, this will be expanded with further Blocks starting in January 2024 and April 2024.​

Each class will take place for 1.5 hours weekly, and consist of a nutrition session, physical activity session, discussion/feedback and next steps for the upcoming week.

Dr Elinor Steel, Child Healthy Weight & Child and Young Person Weight Management Coordinator, Lanarkshire Weight Management Service, said: “GOALS is designed to help families to work towards leading an active and healthy lifestyle by making positive lifestyle changes.

“We currently offer GOALS via our dietitians, and now more families can access the GOALS programme with the launch of our new community version, provided by Health Development Officers launched in leisure centres within in Carluke and Coatbridge.

“Over the coming year, this new GOALS programme will be rolled out to support children, young people and families across Lanarkshire.”

Lindsay Meighan, Health Development Officer, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, commented: “SLLC is pleased to be working in partnership with NHS Lanarkshire on delivering the new GOALS programme. The launch of the new programme will allow families to access a 10-week programme providing opportunities for the family to live a healthier lifestyle.  We are looking forward to delivering GOALs within our local communities for children and young people and their families.”

Melanie Menzies, Health & Wellbeing Manager, North Lanarkshire Council, added: “NLC is delighted to be launching the new GOALs programme and welcome the opportunity for families with concerns about their lifestyle to have some expert guidance in a safe and fun environment. GOALS is part of our partnership with NHS Lanarkshire for Child Healthy Lifestyles and we very much look forward to watching the success of those taking part.”
