NHS Lanarkshire shines a light on Purple Day to raise epilepsy awareness

Mar 26, 2025

Hospitals across Lanarkshire will glow purple today as NHS Lanarkshire marks Purple Day, a global initiative to raise awareness and support for people living with epilepsy.

Epilepsy affects around 50 million people worldwide, including an estimated one in 100 people in the UK. Despite being one of the most common neurological conditions, misconceptions and stigma remain, making awareness days like Purple Day vital in fostering understanding and support.

By lighting up hospitals in purple, NHS Lanarkshire is showing solidarity with those affected by epilepsy, highlighting the importance of education, early diagnosis and ongoing support for individuals and their families.

Dr Cameron Herbert, Consultant Paediatrician with expertise in Neurology, said: “Epilepsy is a long-term neurological condition. Almost 60 per cent of cases are first diagnosed in childhood, and it can have a significant impact on individuals and their families.

“There is a great deal of exciting research being conducted into epilepsy, which we hope will enable more children, young people and adults to live well with this condition. Purple Day is a fantastic way to highlight this important condition.”

NHS Lanarkshire is committed to ensuring that people with epilepsy receive the care, support and resources they need to manage their condition effectively.

Purple Day was founded in 2008 to encourage people around the world to learn more about epilepsy and show their support by wearing purple, hosting events or simply starting conversations.

Visit the Epilepsy Society website for more information on Purple Day and epilepsy support.
