New initiative to support men affected by prostate cancer

Nov 2, 2026

Men affected by prostate cancer in Lanarkshire are being encouraged to sign up for a unique programme that combines fitness, education and peer support.

Delivered by Prostate Scotland in partnership with the SPFL Trust, the Prostate Football Fans in Training (Prostate FFIT) programme will launch at Airdrie Community Trust in January 2027, bringing the successful initiative to Lanarkshire for the first time.

The free 12-week programme has been specifically designed for men living with prostate cancer, whether they are currently undergoing treatment or have completed treatment. Participants will have the opportunity to improve their fitness, learn more about their condition, gain practical advice on healthy eating and lifestyle choices and connect with other men who understand the challenges of living with prostate cancer.

Developed by experts from Prostate Scotland, the University of Glasgow and the SPFL Trust, the programme has already helped men across Scotland improve both their physical and mental wellbeing through a supportive environment that combines exercise, education and shared experience.

Starting on Wednesday 13 January 2027 at 7pm, sessions will be delivered at Airdrie Community Trust and tailored to each participant’s individual needs and fitness levels.

NHS Lanarkshire’s Urology Clinical Lead Sarah Reid, based at University Hospital Monklands, said: “Bringing Prostate FFIT to Lanarkshire is a significant achievement and something we are incredibly proud of.

“Improving the experience of men affected by prostate cancer is something that is very close to the hearts of our urology teams, who work tirelessly every day to support patients throughout their cancer journey.”

“What makes this programme so special is that it looks beyond treatment alone. It helps men understand their condition, build confidence, improve their physical health and connect with others who are facing similar challenges. We know that prostate cancer can have a significant impact on both physical and mental wellbeing, and initiatives like this can make a real difference.”

“We are passionate about supporting men to live as well as possible during and after treatment. The opportunity to bring together expert advice, exercise, healthy lifestyle education and peer support in a familiar community setting is incredibly powerful.

“I’d encourage anyone affected by prostate cancer who feels they could benefit from the programme to find out more and consider signing up. We’re delighted to be working alongside Prostate Scotland, the SPFL Trust and Airdrie Community Trust to bring this opportunity to Lanarkshire.”

Participants will:

  • Meet and share experiences with other men living with prostate cancer
  • Take part in a free, tailored exercise programme over 12 weeks
  • Learn about exercise, diet and nutrition from experts
  • Improve their fitness, confidence and overall wellbeing
  • Receive support regardless of their current fitness level or stage of treatment
