Spring Sonnet
Her sleeves rolled up, old Ma Nature is keen
To sweep away the dusty Winter frost;
Her new broom brushes Earth’s soft mat of green,
As stretching buds, their energy once lost
Spring up from fresh-made beds. Crisp daffodils,
With crocus and bluebells add vivid charm.
Upcycling scraps, its nest the sparrow fills,
And, at dawn’s gleam, rings out its sweet alarm.
We humans boil some eggs to decorate,
And scour the parks and field for hills to roll
Them like Christ’s stone. Come May, we celebrate
Fertile abundance round a pagan pole.
For all the joys drawn from each ancient rite,
Nothing beats leaving work in broad daylight.
Thanks to everyone that entered our competition!
