NHS Lanarkshire’s Research and Innovation Pharmacy Forum will be represented at a major event in London.
A change in prescribing inhalers sparked research, which led to the creation of the poster by Leo Haddock (pictured), an Advanced Clinical Services Pharmacist in primary care, is based at the Hunter Health Centre in East Kilbride.
Called Exploring prescribing patterns following switching between Fostair and Luforbec in NHS Lanarkshire, it will be exhibited by the British Thoracic Society.
The work is part of the partnership between ourselves and the University of Strathclyde, through the University Department of Respiratory Health and Care.
Leo said: “The research focused on inhaler prescribing, specifically monitoring the switch from Fostair to Luforbec inhalers.
“It has been an amazing team effort, multiple individuals with varying expertise and experience coming together. It is so rewarding to see the hard work recognised and celebrated.”
Our Director of Pharmacy, Professor Graeme Bryson, said: “Leo is an honorary researcher with Strathclyde, and he’s got a publication going to the British Thoracic Society in London, as part of a poster presentation.
“That’s quite prestigious because it’s a pharmacist, at a multidisciplinary and hugely internationally-recognised congress.”
“Leo’s poster came from a challenge from the respiratory clinical team. They had an inhaler, reviewed it and moved from one idea to another, and their view was, ‘we don’t think this one’s worked as well as the previous ones have.’
“So, they went back, did the statistical analysis, and got that assurance after the therapeutic review. There was a problem, we applied research methodology and that delivered the confirmation.
“It goes back to that vision for our strategy, which is research to solve problems.”
