NHS Lanarkshire took part in North Lanarkshire Council’s school pupil summer placement programme for the second consecutive year, this time expanding beyond administrative roles to include hands-on healthcare placements.
Five enthusiastic pupils were welcomed into teams across Udston Hospital and Bellshill and Coatbridge health centres, with placements spanning administration, occupational therapy, podiatry and district nursing.
Following a successful pilot in 2023 involving 23 pupils, the programme grew in 2024 with 128 placements to include employer partners like NHS Lanarkshire. This year, 191 pupils benefited from the initiative, which aims to introduce young people aged 16+ to the world of work. It also reflects NHS Lanarkshire’s commitment as an anchor organisation to promote access to quality jobs and raises awareness of career pathways within our local communities.
A key enhancement in 2025 was the inclusion of SQA-accredited qualifications – the Work Placement and Employability Award – allowing pupils to gain formal recognition for the skills developed during their six-week placement.
One of the participants, Amelia, joined the district nursing team at Bellshill health centre. Aspiring to become a paramedic, Amelia was eager to gain real-world healthcare experience. Amelia said: “I’ve gained valuable knowledge that will support my future studies and career. Earning two SQA qualifications is a bonus as they’ll strengthen my university application and CV.
“The support I received was incredible – from nurses answering my questions to weekly check-ins from the NHS employability team. I’d encourage anyone to apply – it’s a friendly environment and opens doors that can shape your future.”
At the programme’s celebration event, pupils and managers shared their experiences, highlighting the benefits for both groups. Pupils gained confidence, work-readiness and professional networks, while managers appreciated the fresh perspectives and energy the young people brought.
With an aging workforce in North Lanarkshire, initiatives like this are vital to inspire and engage the next generation early, showing them the wealth of opportunities available right on their doorstep.
