NHS Lanarkshire ENT surgeon is appointed to two prestigious roles

Oct 29, 2025

Congratulations goes to Professor Arunachalam Iyer, consultant ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon/otologist, who has been appointed Professor at the University of Glasgow after being an honorary professor since August 2025.

On his recent appointment, Professor Iyer said: “Being appointed as a professor at the University of Glasgow is an acknowledgement for all the ENT courses and teaching that I organise at the university.

“Our ENT department is rated as one of the best training centres in the UK for the specialty and this wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my colleagues at NHS Lanarkshire and in the west of Scotland”.

On top of this remarkable achievement, Professor Iyer has also been elected as the next President of the British Society of Otology. Professor Iyer added: “I feel very honoured and privileged to be elected as the next president of the British Society of Otology.

“This is a reflection of the excellent otology work that we conduct at NHS Lanarkshire. We have built a national and international reputation for minimally invasive endoscopic ear surgery which wouldn’t have been possible without the help of everyone in the team and the management”.

Professor Iyer works as a consultant ENT surgeon and otologist at University Hospital Monklands. He is the course director for the temporal bone course, endoscopic ear course, emergency ENT and also the head neck dissection course at Glasgow University.

He has developed a special interest in minimally invasive, endoscopic ear surgery and is an executive board member and outcomes lead of the international working group in endoscopic ear surgery (IWGEES). Professor Iyer is also a council member of the Royal Society of Medicine, section of otology. He is an examiner for the FRCS and MRCS examinations. He is also actively involved charitable work and environmental sustainability by salvaging and donating equipment such as hearing aids to developing countries. He has been awarded the ‘Global Citizenship’ award for these activities through NHS Lanarkshire’s Staff Awards.
