NHS Lanarkshire’s new organisational values have been officially endorsed by the Executive Directors Group.
The endorsement marks an important milestone in the rollout of the new values, which were developed following extensive staff engagement and now align with the national NHS Scotland framework.
With the values now confirmed, the next phase of the work has begun – embedding them into everyday practice across the organisation.
Values sessions will now be held with individual teams to support staff in bringing the values to life within their own services. These sessions will explore what the values mean in practice and how they can shape behaviours, decision-making, and team culture.
The new NHS Lanarkshire values are:
- Care and Compassion
- Dignity and Respect
- Openness, Honesty and Responsibility
- Quality and Teamwork
Kirsty Cole, Head of Organisational Development, said: “We’re delighted that the Executive Directors Group has given its full support to the new values. This endorsement gives us real momentum to begin the practical work of embedding the values across the organisation.
“We know that values are only powerful when they are lived – not just written down. Over the coming months, our team will be working closely with services to explore how these values come to life in their day-to-day work.
“These sessions will create space for reflection, challenge and discussion – helping teams consider what the values mean for them and how they can support a positive, inclusive and high-performing culture.
“The behaviours that accompany our values were shaped by the voices of more than 700 colleagues. That’s why we’re confident they reflect the reality of working in NHS Lanarkshire and give us a strong foundation for the future.
“We want everyone – regardless of role, band or location – to feel ownership of these values, and to know that they underpin how we work together and how we care for the people we serve.”
Team sessions are now underway and will continue across the organisation over the coming months.
Louise Long, Chief Executive of NHS Lanarkshire, said: “Our values are more than a statement – they are in everything we do, they are how we interact with one another. Every one of us has a part to play in living these values and making them visible in how we care for patients, support our colleagues and lead our services.
“These values reflect who we are as an organisation and what we stand for – compassion, respect, honesty, teamwork and a commitment to doing the right thing. They apply to all of us, in every setting and every role, whether we work in frontline care, support services or leadership positions.
“I encourage all staff to take time to reflect on how these values apply to their work and to embrace the opportunity to explore them more deeply through the upcoming team sessions. By living these values every day, we create a kinder, safer and more connected culture – one where both staff and patients can thrive.
“Together, we can ensure these values are felt by everyone who comes into contact with NHS Lanarkshire, and that they guide the decisions we make, the actions we take, and the care we deliver.”
