NHS Lanarkshire’s three acute hospitals – University Hospital Hairmyres, University Hospital Monklands and University Hospital Wishaw – will be illuminated in red this weekend to mark Remembrance Sunday.
The poignant tribute is a symbol of respect and remembrance for all those who have served, sacrificed and lost their lives in conflict.
It also provides an opportunity to recognise the courage and dedication of our Armed Forces community, past and present, and the important contribution veterans and reservists continue to make across NHS Lanarkshire.
Claire Ritchie, NHS Lanarkshire’s Service Director – Interface and Veterans’ Champion, said “Remembrance Sunday is an important opportunity for us all to pause, reflect and remember the extraordinary sacrifices made by generations of servicemen and women, many of whom never returned home to their families and loved ones.
“By illuminating our hospitals in red, we are making a simple but powerful gesture of remembrance and solidarity. It is a visible expression of our gratitude and respect for those who have served, those who continue to serve and the families who have supported them.”
NHS Lanarkshire is proud to be a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant and holds Gold status under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, recognising its commitment to supporting veterans, reservists and the wider Armed Forces community.
This commitment extends beyond remembrance, with practical support for Armed Forces personnel and their families, including dedicated healthcare pathways, employment opportunities and partnerships with organisations such as Veterans First Point and the Defence Medical Welfare Service.
Claire added: “Remembrance is also about recognising the responsibilities we carry today. As an organisation, we have a duty to ensure that veterans, serving personnel and their families feel valued, understood and supported.
“I’m proud of the commitment NHS Lanarkshire continues to demonstrate, not only through occasions such as Remembrance Sunday, but through the care, compassion and practical support we provide throughout the year.”
We will remember them.
