A new animation designed to help people understand and improve their sleep health has been launched, bringing together expert insight and practical advice in an accessible, easy-to-understand format.

The animation is hosted on the The Sleep Charity website and forms part of its wider resources on The Five Principles of Good Sleep Health. It aims to support people who struggle with sleep, including those experiencing ongoing insomnia, by breaking down the key foundations of healthy sleep and explaining why they matter.

Sleep plays a vital role in both physical and mental wellbeing, yet many people continue to miss out on its full benefits. The animation highlights how small, consistent changes can make a meaningful difference to sleep quality, day-to-day functioning and overall health.

Professor Colin A Espie, one of the world’s leading sleep experts, explains the importance of these principles in a quote featured alongside the animation “I have spent the past 45 years emphasising that sleep is fundamental to our health and everyday function. Yet as a society most of us still don’t get full benefit from our sleep, and many people really struggle with insomnia. People often ask me, ‘what are the key ingredients of good sleep?’ So, here is my answer. I have distilled the ‘secret’ of good sleep down to 5 principles. Following these principles will unlock the benefits of your sleep and give you better days as well as better nights. There’s some work involved, but you are worth it. Remember sleep is nothing less than nature’s medicine.”

The animation and accompanying resources are freely available and are suitable for anyone looking to better understand their sleep or take positive steps towards healthier sleep habits.
