Men’s Health Week focus: why AAA screening matters

Jun 12, 2025

Men’s Health Week (9–15 June) is a timely prompt for male staff – and their loved ones – to prioritise their own health checks.

One simple action that can save lives is the free abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening offered to men in Scotland when they turn 65.

As part of our commitment to staff health and wellbeing, we want every colleague to have the information they need to stay well.

Morag Nicholson, Public Health Programme Manager, said: “An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a bulge in the main blood vessel in the abdomen; it rarely causes symptoms but can be fatal if it bursts. A simple ten‑minute ultrasound scan can detect it early. All men in Scotland are invited for screening at age 65, and anyone 65 or over who has not yet been tested can still arrange a scan.

“AAA screening is quick, painless and it saves lives. Most men will receive the all‑clear, but early detection is critical for the small number who need treatment.

“A large aneurysm is found in roughly 1 in 1,100 first‑time scans, yet the ten‑minute ultrasound involves no radiation and provides peace of mind.

“During Men’s Health Week we’re asking staff to spread the word – if you’re male and approaching 65, watch for your invitation, and if you’re already 65 or older, book now.”

Colleagues, relatives or friends who are eligible in Lanarkshire can book directly with the NHS Lanarkshire AAA screening service on 01698 754 388
