Let’s get talking about chronic pain

Sep 3, 2026

Throughout September, NHS Lanarkshire is marking Global Pain Awareness Month by raising awareness of chronic pain and the support available to people living with it.

Chronic pain, also known as long-term pain, affects thousands of people across Lanarkshire and an estimated 38% of adults in Scotland.

It is a recognised health condition that can continue long after an injury or illness has healed. It can affect physical health, emotional wellbeing, employment, relationships and everyday activities.

Understanding more about pain, including why it occurs, can be an important first step towards managing it effectively.

Dr Kieran Dinwoodie, GP and Chair of NHS Lanarkshire’s Chronic Pain Task and Finish Group, said: “One of the biggest challenges for people living with chronic pain is that it is often invisible to others. This can leave people feeling isolated, misunderstood or unsure where to turn for help.

“By improving understanding, we can help reduce stigma, encourage earlier intervention and make sure people know where they can access support.

“Pain is common, but talking about it isn’t. Let’s change that.”
